VISX Iris Registration

For success in any endeavor there are three essential steps: performing a comprehensive study of the pertinent issues; developing the perfect plan and flawlessly executing that plan. Successful laser eye surgery also requires attention to those same steps.

Why Is Iris Registration Critical

Unfortunately, at many generic LASIK centers, only the first two steps get attention. That’s because measuring the eye and generating the plan is only half the battle. Even under ideal circumstances, the human eye is constantly exhibiting very rapid darting movements. Those movements occur at a velocity able to completely spin around in its socket twice in one second. Those same eye muscles frequently torque the eye so that it can cyclorotate, turning like the hands on a clock. Delivering even the best-laid laser vision correction plan under those circumstances is a daunting challenge. Unfortunately, when using old, outdated technology every time the eye rotates out of position the laser pulse delivered falls onto the wrong spot on the corneal surface. As you can imagine, misfires like that serve to introduce significant error into the process. Those errors predispose patients to retreatments or even unwanted side effects such as blurry vision, glare and halo effects.

That is why at Will Vision and Laser Centers, we use only the most advanced 3D eye tracking system available anywhere in the world, capable of compensating for virtually all eye movements, including eye cyclorotation. As a result, each laser pulse in your surgery plan is delivered accurately to the correct spot on your eyes. The results are truly amazing and no other laser platform available in the world can provide that level of accuracy except the VISX Star S4IR available at Will Vision and Laser Centers.

What is Iris Registration

What makes the VISX Star S4IR so special? Iris recognition technology. That’s what the “IR” stands for. But be careful, not all VISX systems out there have IR. As you already know, iris recognition technology is leading the way in security methodology. The shape, color and contour of your iris is completely unique – just like your DNA – and can be used to correctly identify you even if you have an identical twin. Adapting that same technology to laser vision correction has propelled LASIK to new levels of accuracy and precision.

During the measurement and planning stages of your bladeless Lasik at Will Vision, our sophisticated technology will match your eye’s measurements to the unique features of your eye’s iris. We call this step “iris registration” because we are accurately “registering” your treatment to the precise shape and position of your eye in space. When we treat your eye, the laser matches up the features of your iris to the master plan and then delivers that laser plan with pinpoint accuracy.

Seems rather intuitive, doesn’t it? However, at many other generic LASIK centers they don’t use iris registration technology and, as a result, even the most perfect of plans can go awry if your eye cyclorotates or turns during the actual procedure.

At Will Vision, we’d rather rely on really amazing new technology than to keep ourselves busy selling enhancement warranties and trying to stop a flood of retreatments.

Three Steps Not Two

Having LASIK surgery may be the stuff of your dreams, but it certainly shouldn’t be a nightmare. Three steps, not just two. Precise eye measurements, the correct surgical plan and pinpoint iris registration for delivery of the treatment accurately and precisely are all critical to success. That’s why at Will Vision we believe that better technology leads to better results and better vision. Anything less is just unacceptable.
