A Critical Tool for the Treatment of Presbyopia
The AcuTarget® system is a highly specialized measurement system that is most frequently used in conjunction with the KAMRA® corneal inlay used to eliminate the need for reading glasses. Because the successful use of these inlays is limited to the most experienced refractive surgeons, Will Vision is actually one of only a highly select number of centers in the United States that use the AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System.
Qualifies Candidates
Currently, the AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System is the only system in the world able to evaluate the optics of the entire eye by measuring images projected onto the retina directly.
This new objective method allows the Will Vision team to better understand your visual performance especially if you have cataract, dry eye syndrome or other conditions that might limit you as a good candidate for laser vision correction or advanced presbyopia surgery.

Quantifies Optical Light Scatter
Quality of vision is determined by many factors including standard visual acuity, wavefront aberrometry and optical light scatter. Until now, it has not been possible to quantify the role of optical light scatter in adversely affecting visual quality from disorders ranging from cataract formation to halos following laser vision correction procedures such as PRK or Lasik. Employing double-pass retinal imaging, the AcuTarget® diagnostic system provides a highly accurate measure of optical light scatter and provides a quantitative measurement expressed in terms of an Objective Scatter Index (OSI). Light scatter that can lead to visual degradation and is not measurable using traditional wavefront aberrometry and presents a diagnostic challenge that only the AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System is currently able to answer.
In the treatment of presbyopia, the objective scatter index or OSI is also highly useful in assuring the surgeon and patient that there is not excessive optical scatter from a cataract or other component of the optical media that could adversely affect the success of the KAMRA®inlay or laser vision correction procedure. With the AcuTarget® system we are able to carefully evaluate the degree of optical light scatter or OSI level prior to surgery.
Measures Accommodation and Pseudoaccommodation
In addition to measuring optical light scatter, the AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System is also able to quantitatively measure the amplitude or amount of accommodation and pseudoaccommodation in the human visual system. As a result, with the AcuTarget® we can now objectively measure the ability of patients to focus on near targets.
The AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System is particularly useful in the treatment of presbyopia. With the AcuTarget® we can accurately quantify a patient’s ability to focus on near tasks (accommodation) before and after presbyopia treatments such as the KAMRA® corneal inlay or Life Style Lasik. No other device can accurately measure accommodation which makes the AcuTarget® system critical to the success of these advanced presbyopia treatments.
Quantifies Tear Film and Dry Eye
In addition, the level of success of laser vision correction in general and advanced presbyopia treatments in particular is highly dependent upon the quality of the tear film both pre and post operatively. The AcuTarget® is a highly sensitive tool that can identify and assess the quality of the tear film. The information can provide important direction for the surgical team and help chart a trajectory that can help ensure a satisfactory visual outcome.
Assures Centration of KAMRA® Inlay
Furthermore, the AcuTarget® is an essential tool in identifying the ideal position of the KAMRA® inlay in the visual axis. Proper positioning of the inlay is essential to optimizing the near vision effect of the implant. The AcuTarget® system is used by Dr. Will to determine the correct position for the KAMRA® inlay pre operatively as well as to measure the actual position post operatively.

Detects Ocular Pathology
If a patient does have some early cataract formation, the AcuTarget® is ideal for its early detection and the determination of its degree of maturity. It is also possible to monitor cataract formation over time to assess the rate of lens clouding to better determine the optimal timing for cataract removal. In addition, certain corneal dystrophies, corneal scars or disorders of the vitreous can also lead to excessive optical scatter. The AcuTarget® is ideal for both diagnosing and monitoring the evolution of such pathologies over time and can help us determine the best timing for surgical intervention as well as to accurately assess the effectiveness of various medical therapies.
How it Works
The optics of the human eye projects images onto the retina just as a camera delivers images on a film or CCD camera chip. Using a highly precise measurement of what optical engineers call the “Modulation Transfer Function” or MTF, the AcuTarget® Optical Quality Analysis System is able to objectively measure the quality of that retinal image. Because the MTF is overestimated by other wavefront aberrometers when ocular light scattering exists, the AcuTarget® is an essential tool whose function cannot be replicated by any other diagnostic device. As a result, this unique feature gives us a much better understanding of your vision.
