Tips for Relaxing Your Eyes
With the abundance and popularity of modern technology, eye strain can be a real problem. Research shows that 50-90% of people that work at a computer screen have some symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS), or eye problems relating to computer use. What can you do? Relax your eyes often to relieve eye strain and to alleviate some of the vision problems caused by regular computer use.
Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
The simple act of looking away from your computer screen can provide much needed relief and relaxation for your eyes. Look away from your screen every 20 minutes. Look at something that is about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Address Vision Issues
Eye strain symptoms are typically in worse in people that need glasses, but aren’t using them, or for those that are using the wrong prescription. If you use glasses, make sure you wear them as needed. Even better, ditch the glasses and discover better vision with LASIK. When you can see properly, your eyes are better able to adapt to visual challenges.
Many people blink less frequently when using a computer or other electronic devices. Pay attention to your blinking and focus on blinking more often. Closing your eyes for a few minutes can also provide a needed refresh.
If your eyes are feeling tired or strained, take a break from what you’re doing. When you take a break, try one of these simple relaxation exercises:
- Place your elbows on a desk and place the palms of your hands over the eyes (your fingers should be extending toward your forehead). Close your eyes and breathe deeply for several seconds or longer.
- Move your eyes around in your eye sockets. Roll your eyes up, down, and side-to-side. You can also roll your eyes clockwise and counterclockwise.
