LASIK FAQs

Are you interested in learning more about the LASIK procedure offered at Will Vision & Laser Centers? Our LASIK FAQs page has already outlined some questions and answers about this popular procedure that has provided millions of patients with clear vision. In his latest blog post, Dr. Brian Will continues this discussion by answering more LASIK FAQs.

How Do I Know if I’m a LASIK Candidate?

This is one of the most common questions that we receive about LASIK, which is why we have provided tools such as the LASIK Self Evaluation Test to help gauge whether LASIK can help you achieve your vision goals. Your best bet, of course, is to come in for a complimentary LASIK evaluation, where Dr. Will can assess your vision and determine factors that would make you a good LASIK candidate — or not. In general, LASIK may be right for you if you are over 18 years old and have healthy eyes, a stable prescription (with no change for at least one year) and sufficient corneal thickness for the procedure.

Is LASIK Safe?

The LASIK procedure, as with any surgery, comes with risks. However, the chance of vision-reducing problems after surgery have proven rare (less than 1 percent of patients). This statistic proves that the LASIK procedure is one of the safest surgeries performed.

What Type of Vision Can I Expect after LASIK?

LASIK has a high success rate, with 96 percent of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better. This means that after surgery they are able to drive, play sports and watch TV — all without glasses or contacts! It’s no wonder that LASIK patients frequently use the term “life-changing” when discussing the surgery. They are amazed to experience sharper vision than they had ever imagined — and quickly after surgery (typically within the first 24 to 48 hours).

Can Both Eyes Be Done in the Same Procedure?

Yes. In fact, most LASIK procedures are performed this way, with both eyes worked on in one procedure. This is more convenience for the patient, who only has to make one appointment for surgery. The LASIK procedure typically takes about 10 minutes per eye.

What’s the Difference between Traditional and Wavefront LASIK?

At Will Vision & Laser Centers, we offer both the traditional LASIK procedure and Wavefront CustomVue LASIK. Both procedures are effective in correcting common refractive errors that lead to blurry near vision, distance vision, or both. However, unlike traditional LASIK, which is based on a patient’s eyeglass prescription, our Wavefront CustomVue LASIK procedure uses the latest wavefront technology to create a detailed “map” of the eye, which is then used for treatment. This map includes higher-order aberrations of the eye that are responsible for focusing problems and problems related to light sensitivity, and therefore allows the surgeon to reshape the cornea more precisely and accurately. The result: better visual outcomes.
