5 Criteria for a Good LASIK Candidate

LASIK has helped countless men and women to achieve better vision. You could be next. Are you a good candidate for LASIK surgery in the Pacific Northwest?

Below, discover five important criteria for LASIK surgery.

The Right Age

Not too old and not too young, LASIK is best performed on adults in the prime of their lives. LASIK is typically done on adults that are at least 18 years old. Often, we wait until patients are in their mid-20s since eyesight often changes during young adulthood.

As long as you’re healthy, there is no upper age limit for LASIK. Many adults experience age-related eyesight changes starting in their mid-40s, a condition known as presbyopia. LASIK is still safe for these patients, but may not be the most effective choice. Dr. Will may recommend other options like Lifestyle LASIK.

Stable Vision

Does your vision prescription change every year? LASIK is most effective on patients with stable vision. If your eyesight is changing, it may be best to wait until things settle down for your procedure.

Not Currently Pregnant

Pregnancy is a time for change, and that includes your eyes. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter the shape of the cornea. Additionally, some of the medications needed for LASIK aren’t studied in pregnant women, and we don’t know how they affect a growing baby.

Wait until you are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding to schedule your LASIK consultation with Dr. Will.

Healthy Body and Eyes

LASIK safety is one of our priorities at Will Vision and Laser Centers. We know that your vision is invaluable. Making sure that your eyes and body are healthy is vital for good LASIK results.

The following conditions may affect your ability to have refractive surgery:

  • Dry eyes
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Glaucoma
  • Keratoconus

If you have health conditions, come in for a consultation, and we can talk about options. These conditions don’t automatically disqualify you from LASIK surgery; they mean that we need to spend some extra time making sure surgery is safe before we proceed.

Educated and Informed

We want you to be delighted by your results after LASIK surgery. The patients that know what to expect and have realistic expectations are the happiest after surgery. As you prepare for LASIK, spend time learning about it. Our website is filled with helpful resources so you can learn about the procedure.
