Best Paper of Session at 2009 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery - A Novel Method for the Centration of Femtosecond Laser Procedures

Will Vision and Laser Centers is pleased to announce that Dr. Will has been recognized with the honor of having his presentation entitled “A Novel Method for the Centration of Femtosecond Laser Procedures” selected as Best Paper of Session at the April, 2009 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in San Francisco, California.

Papers are recognized for their scientific merit, innovation and the significance of their contribution to the field of refractive surgery. From several thousand submissions, only a select number of papers presented at the ASCRS achieve Best Paper status.

This achievement further recognizes Dr. Will’s pioneering contributions to the practical application of Femtosecond laser technology to laser vision correction.  Accurate centration is a critical challenge for nearly all procedures that utilize femtosecond laser technology including LASIK surgery, intracorneal ring or lens placement, arcuate incision placement, intracorneal lens extraction and corneal transplantation.  Dr. Will proposed and patented a revolutionary marking technique that employs excimer laser technology to mark the cornea using iris registration and pupil centroid shift compensation and highlight this “Smart Mark” using fluorescent dyes.  With appropriate “Smart Marks” the surgeon can then more accurately align the surgical procedure to the patient’s visual axis.  Utilization of this novel technique will likely provide superior post-operative visual acuities and fewer intraoperative complications.
