Why
do some places advertise surgery for $499 an eye?
It is
exceedingly rare to actually pay what is advertised at discount centers, since
they employ classic bait-and-switch marketing tactics. First of all, the
advertised price is only for very low prescriptions with no astigmatism. The
price goes up substantially from there. These prices often do not include
post-operative care. Secondly, the laser used is most often an older model long
paid for that does not require the surgeon to pay the laser company royalties
(which go toward continual improvements in the technology and upkeep). As a
rule, the lower the price, the older the technology used on your eyes. These
lasers almost never have a tracking device to ensure that your eye movement
during surgery is compensated for. Any discount surgery will certainly not include the
most advanced wavefront technology, essentially a “visual fingerprint”
customized treatment. And finally and most importantly, a discounted price will
not include IntraLase, the ONLY bladeless all-laser refractive surgery
available.
Always
make sure to ask the following:
- What
prescription does the advertised price cover?
- What
will it cost to do my prescription?
- What
laser will be used on my eyes?
- Does
the laser have an eye tracker?
- Does
the laser utilize the latest custom wavefront technology?
- Will
my flaps be created with or without a blade?
- Will
I be charged for my follow-up visits?
- What
will it cost me to have the best available treatment at your office?
